Defending oneself against a thief (Ex. 22:2-3)

"If a thief be found breaking up, and be smitten that he die, there shall no blood be shed for him./ If the sun be risen upon him, there shall be blood shed for him; for he should make full restitution; if he have nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft." (Ex. 22:2-3)

I don’t know what it is it, when I saw these two verses in my reading yesterday, I knew I wanted to say a few comments about them today. Maybe it is because I know that attacking someone is wrong, and the fact that killing someone is wrong goes without saying. People were put to death for striking someone so hard that they killed another in the Old Testament (Ex. 21:12). And then also these is the verse about turning the other cheek given to us by Jesus as well (Matt. 5:39). But then again, we have the right to defend ourselves, and we should not let our houses be broken into (Matt. 24:43).

Regardless, it is interesting that the fact that no blood would be shed for the killing of a thief in the night is not the case during the day. Instead, the one who would kill the thief would need to make restitution for the murder. People have the right to defend themselves, but there is also a need to allow the normal laws to be followed when it comes to punishing those who do evil as well.
